Gayle B. Harrell (born 1943, Nashville, Tennessee) serves as a Republican member of the Florida House of Representatives representing the 81st district.
Harrell has served the district on two occasions, first from 2000–2008 and (after sitting out one term pursuant to Florida's constitutionally mandated term limitations) again starting in 2010. During her time as a Florida legislator, Harrell was best known for successfully sponsoring advancements to Florida's seaport security laws in the wake of "9-11". The legislation was later used in numerous other states as a model for seaport security.
Harrell ran for Congress in Florida's 16th congressional district against incumbent Democrat Tim Mahoney, but lost in the Republican election to attorney Tom Rooney, who went on to defeat Mahoney in the general election in November. Harrell was endorsed by Mike Huckabee, the American Medical Association, and the National Rifle Association. [1]
Gayle received her bachelor's degree in Spanish from the University of Florida in 1964. She also holds a Master of Arts degree in Latin American history from UF.
